Robin -
I really like the way the SME sounds. I used to have a VPI HW19 IV (it currently resides in a living-room system) that also sounded good, but this one sounds better. I've got to say that it's probably overpriced. (However, it is made in jolly old England.)
I have the ring clamp too which is not pictured here :D
Rik; me too! No ring clamp on mine though...
The turntable I dream realistically about... the VPI HRX
And the turntable I dream more unrealistically about the Rockport Syetem III Sirius - a cool $74,000.00!
Here's a better picture of the Rockport Sirius in some lucky b*$^#ds system with some EMM digital equipment and a daRTzeel pre-amp....
And here's my new baby.
Very cool! How long have you had it? I first saw the Teres turntables at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest two years ago. They are simply STUNNING in appearance and the way they present music.
Lucky you, enjoy!
Here's one of their other models on a stand of their own design and manufacture as well from the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest. The picture doesn't do it justice - it was beautiful...
Here's the incredible Walker Proscenium... also from the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest

Excellent TT... :D I'll bet you have a wonderful record collection as well... ;)
I have about 6000 Lps vs 2000 cds/sacds. I still prefer the analog format and the 12.5 arm helps tracking throughout the record
Rik_Rankin
09-07-2006, 06:20 PM
Rik; me too! No ring clamp on mine though...
I started off with an extended Aries with the 12.5 arm. I had the same platter as you. I changed to the acrylic platter because I wanted the ring clamp and also changed to the lower rpm motor with the bigger pully. With that plus the use of the ring clamp, I couldn't use the plastic motor cover which I didn't like anyway. Does it sound better with the acrylic platter? Absolutely not!!! If I had to do it again, I would have left it alone. The only reason they changed to that newer platter was because it costs VPI less money for those, not because it's better. It's sounds a liitle more lively, but the bass was deeper, more solid and more focused before. If you are thinking about spending money for a change, leave it alone. You will also find that "panel magic" sold at home depot will make your platter look like new if it dries out and gets spotty.

Around the 1985 timeframe, a co-worker of mine had told me about Finial Technology being a local company which she has made a small investment in. At the time, Finial had a revolutionary idea of the Laser Turntable in the midst of the CeeDee (digital) revolution. It's now 20+ years later and I'm glad that the Laser Turntable is still alive and doing well :)

This unit has been a bit of a marketing disaster. First, it received some negative reviews because the records must be 100% clean with a vacuum record cleaning machine and their were serious questions regarding the price/performance ratio. Also, the distributors changed and there are still repair issues (it has to go back to Japan). The product was really trashed by the absolute sound and they never discuss it.

My own turntable. I think the Michell models are still one of the best looking tables around. I really like the industrial look, I don't like the 'wood' look of some tables at all. Also, I don't like the acrylic extravaganza of Clearaudio.
This one is also really, really good (oop now):

All this turntable talk is really getting me going! And my VPI 19 IV has been discontinued. I am thinking about a new VPI but I am having trouble deciding which model. My local dealer only has the Scoutmaster and Superscoutmaster. I'd really like to hear the Aries and TNT since I want a beautiful black turntable to match the rest of my equipment. Do any Texans out there know of a dealer within driving distance of Dallas who stocks both?

Unfortunately, being stupid is no longer illegal in most industrialized nations. If it were, about 50% of the general population would be in jail, and about 75% of the folks in the top income bracket would be in maximum security facilities, because of their egregious level of stupidity...
This system photo just proves my theory. Money and success does not buy intelligence or signify competence. In fact a good argument can be made, based on real-world observations, that the opposite is true--that monetary success is inversely proportionate to intelligence, as a general rule. Really smart, really rich people are actually the exception, not the rule.
Cases in point: Nikolai Tesla died a relatively poor and obscure man and almost nobody knows who won the most recent Nobel Prize in Physics, but G.W. Bush is president of the USA and the Hilton sisters have shoes and jewelry worth more than the GNP of some third-world nations...

There was someone who actually put his turntable on top of his subwoofer!!! When I pointed out to him that this was probably not the wisest choice, he went on to say that the sub did not vibrate (!!!), and that it was just fine there. Rather than start a big arguement, I simply ignored him, and let him continue to believe that the world is flat...

--RichardWhen I was a repair tech for a home/commercial security company I met a lot of recently wealthy people. After so much exposure to this, like seeing a woman driving a new Mercedes S class argue with a clerk over a 12˘ error in the change she received (I gave her a quarter and told her to get the %^*@ out of the line :D), and so much pondering how these people were able to make money I've come to a conclusion. Being stupid means a reduced awareness in the risks of business and an increased awareness of the needs of the real source for making money in the consumer economy: stupid people. It certainly doesn't apply to all wealthy people, but it does at least explain rich idiots. It also emphasizes the main problem (as I see it) in the modern world: it's too difficult for stupid people to remove themselves from the gene pool. I am against safety warning labels and helmet laws. :)
As for the TT, so long as there are nice things in the world these things will be purchased by those that have no idea how or why they're nice, only that the magazine said so; and it costs more than Bubba's Technic next door.

But you must consider that anyone with the scratch to buy a $14k TT probably has a VERY well-trained maid to clean, dust, and polish twice a week...
--Richard
I hope! My maid dusted my turntable and bent the cantilever on my Aurum Beta S cartridge! I got the company to reimburse me, but now I put the stylus protector on it whenever the maid comes over and put a sign right in front of it to not clean. In fact, I don't let her clean the system at all.

2X that... Well, I can't be sure if it was her or if it was me! It was many years ago and so I bought a new Rega Exact and ALWAYS use the stylus guard on it now! I hot glued a twist tie from a bread bag to the plastic cover and when I put it on I just wrap the ends around the tone arm and it stays in place nicely and keeps the $600 cart safe! That was an expensive lesson!

Very interesting! Pretty dang expensive too! I wonder if it is old or new. It looks so good it could be brand new, but it sure does not follow the current style of TT's that you see coming out... More like stuff you would see in the '80's, not to mention that is when Nak was BIG!

Definitely from the late 80s, early 90s. The Dragon would swing out a little tonearm into the leadout groove area and measure the eccentricity of the album. It would then offset the platter the correct amount thereby eliminating any wow caused by record eccentricity. Pitches were absolutely, perfectly stable, as was imaging.

Risabet, thanks for the history lesson, I knew you would know all about it! Very cool info! That is something. Did Nak call all their top products Dragon? I remember a cassette deck that was called the Dragon too and it was really something... Or maybe I am just confused again.

The Naka Dragon was indeed a wonderful tape deck, but the flagship was the 1000ZXL...

To the best of my knowledge they did call their TOTL items Dragons. The cassette deck had automatically adjustable heads to minimize azimuth error for peak high freq. response. Both the TT and the deck were amazing pieces of engineering though very expensive at the time.

Air pressure is used for 2 different functions on some tts. 1. - to hold the record to the platter and flatten it, or 2. - to move the tangential tracking tonearm across the record. Some contemporary tt manufacturers still use either or both of these techniques.

Some also use an air bearing for the platter, Mapleknoll comes to mind.

Yea, that picture is for an air bearing tone arm at the very least and could be ALL of the above items. That is WAY TO MUCH TROUBLE to listen to a record!

Hardly, I know for me part of the fun is the ritual. Properly designed air bearing devices are actually not that fussy once set up correctly. The key is having everything perfectly level, and I do mean perfectly. Also keep your air dry as moisture in the system is a definite no-no!

My girl works for herself and could not afford to reimburse me, and like I said, I am not sure it was her and frankly it probably WAS ME! She tends not to touch the electronics gear! She did break a few of my wife's Precious Moments pieces but all combined probably were not 1/3rd that Exact!

Hi,
It looks to me like it has a linear tracking tonearm, that uses air bearings to eliminate friction. Basically it uses compressed air to 'float' the tonearm so there is no mechanical contact, eliminating all friction. The pressure guages are to set the pressure correctly. The guage on the far left looks like a dial indicator, likely to adjust the mechanical alignment.

Peter,
A tone arm floating on air..., perfectly level... To me that is just astounding. :wow: The level of phonograph dedication to the very best quality sound possible simply amazes me. :wow: It is like Robert said it is all in the ritual, but it seems to be a bit more..., a quest for phonographic perfection, and I mean that in a quite a good audio way. It seems this kinda commitment of phono enthusiasm this quite anal as well... :o
